missing there sisters, found safe. >> how police track down one of america's most wanted. and how he ended up dead. >> hi. i'm kai jackson. >> and i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. >> one of america's most wanted criminals is dead. police move in on the mississippi man accused of moving in on a mother and daughter and kidnapping her two -- killing a mother and daughter and kidnapping her other two children. the missing two sisters are now safe. >> reporter: the fbi says 35- year-old adam mayes, shot and killed himself thursday evening, after s.w.a.t. teams moved in to arrest him near new albany, mississippi. >> preliminary reports indicate mayes shot himself in the head and was later died in the hospital. >> reporter: mayes was on the run after he disappeared with joanne, adrian, alexandri aand

8-year-old kayleah. the bodies of joanne and adrian baines was found on the property in northern mississippi last week. mayes' wife said he killed them so that he could kidnap the younger girls. teresa and her husband were charged with first-degree murder. mayess was seen three days after the killing on a security camera. he went on the fbi's 10 most wanted list, and eluded police. until a tipster spotted them. >> the girls were found alive and appeared to be unharmed. >> reporter: the two baines girls were taken to the hospital for observation. danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> the girls were suffering from exposure, dehydration and poison ivy. a howard county man will stand trial for the 1991 killing of his wife. denise has more on the decades- old cold case. >> howard county jury has indicted 57-year-old robert jarrett in the more of his wife

christine. he reported his wife missing in 1991. police considered him a suspect at that time. but they had no evidence. and jarrett refused to alu -- allow them into their home. his second wife permitted them to search the house while he was out. and police found the remains under the floor of a bed in the backyard. >> jarrett's second wife is filing for divorce. a baltimore jury convicts political consultant julius henson on one of the four charges on the election night robocall scandal. derek valcourt covers this case. he talked to henson and the jury. >> reporter: after a two-week trial and a 20-month ordeal, this is a partial victory for julius henson. >> obviously, we're related. >> reporter: jurors found julius henson not guilty of the two most serious charges against him, charges of election fraud and conspiracy for the robocall he wrote on behalf of republican bob

ehrlich's campaign. >> the jury has spoken on it, and we respect them on it. >> reporter: the prosecutor tried to convince jurors the robocall was an illegal attempt to trick african americans into not voting. but henson argued the robocall was reverse psychology. and jurors agreed, there was nothing illegal about it. >> when you come down to dealing with voters, and everyone is trying to get folks on their side, it's a tactic, you know. you see it in the media every day. >> reporter: but the robocall did not contain the legally- required authority line, saying it was paid for by the ehrlich campaign. henson said he left it out at his customer's request. >> i told them the correct thing to do. they refused to do it. >> reporter: but jurors found him guilty of conspiring to leave off the authority line. yet not guilty of actually leaving it off. the jury forewoman told wjz, jurors felt an experienced consultant like henson should

have known better. >> he already knew. he should have never put his business involved in that. he never should have done that. >> reporter: henson says he will appeal on his one guilty charge. and he says he is moving on. he will next be putting his political campaign knowledge to work, fighting against same-sex marriage in maryland. live at the courthouse, derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> derek, thank you. julius henson faces the possibility of up to a year in jail. and up to $1,000 in fines when he's sentenced june 13th. a maryland mother is accused of assaulting her 2- month-old baby. it happened in wicomico county. police say 24-year-old nicole sinone of salisbury, grabbed her baby by the hair and threw him to the ground. sinone is charged with first- degree assault and being held on a $20,000 bail. police say the mother was arguing with another woman at the time of the alleged assault. fear in the air. a north carolina man tries to open the cabin door of an airplane in flight.

diana rocco reports, the man is facing charges of interfering with a flight crew. >> like at first, people were kind of like freaking out. because he was opening the cabin door. >> reporter: frantic moments aboard u.s. airways express flight, 3801, leaving portland, maine yesterday, after a passenger allegedly tries to open the cabin door in midflight. >> as soon as a lady screams, like what are you doing? he immediately went to the man's side. he was 7ing drinks at the time. >> reporter: passengers say a quick-thinking servant was serving drinks when he saw him try to open the cabin door. he quickly jumped in, pulled him away, subduing him until federal marshalls pulled in. >> we think he was going -- he was confused for the bathroom door. because then he peed his pants. >> the plane was forced to make an emergency landing. and he was escorted off in handcuffs and arrested. >> he didn't seem like somebody

who was trying to cause harm. he seemed like somebody perhaps who decided he needed to leave. >> reporter: rob gibbs was one of the few passengers to book another flight, finally arriving in philadelphia late thursday evening. ensolico's family tells eyewitness news he is the vice president of a food company and has five children. he suffers from seizures, where he gets disoriented. >> he does gibberish and doesn't know where he is or what he is doing. he kind of panics. >> that passenger is out of jail, after posting $500 bail. his attorney expects the charges to eventually be dropped. new charges today for the man accused of shooting an assault rifle at the white house. two additional counts are being added to the 17 that oscar ortega hernandez already faces. hernandez, who is from idaho, is accused of using a rifle with a scope to fire a series of shots at the white house,

november 11th. the president and first lady were out of town at the time. president obama raises a record amount of money in a celebrity fundraiser. in tonight's campaign 2012 report, the president is proving he's got the loyalty of hollywood's elite. jessica kartalija is live in the newsroom with more on the millions raised last night. jess? >> kai, it was a mix of political power and hollywood glamour. the party was held alt george clooney's home in the hollywood hills. tickets to the star-studded event cost $30,000 and raised $15 million for the president's campaign. funny man rob reiner, steven spielberg, robert downey, jr., and baltimore's own stacy keebler were just a few of the stars to attend. meanwhile, republican white house hopeful mitt romney is answering allegations about some behavior in high school. the washington post is reporting that romney helped pin down a student 49 years ago and cut his hair. romney says he doesn't remember the incident, but he's sorry to anyone that he may have harmed.

it is sunny and mild. 71 degrees in central maryland root now. the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. police in philadelphia are searching for a man caught on camera, throwing hot coffee on a doughnut shop worker. when the employee asked him to pay for the sandwich, the customer becomes irate, saying he has already paid. the argument ends with a man grabbing a cup of coffee from the employees' hands, throwing it on her. he then leaves. the woman suffered second- degree burns on her arm. police say the suspect is never seen on the tape paying for his food. a violent attack, caught on tape inside a dollar store in texas. police say this is a man dressed as a woman, demanding cash from the clerk. the clerk tries to get the money, but the robber becomes impatient and fires a round.

the clerk panics, goes around the counter, and tries to grab the gun from the cross-dressing gunman. another cashier joins in. but the suspect gets away. he is still at large tonight. in today's wjz healthwatch, as we get ready to welcome summer, doctors remind people of the danger of skin cancer. monique griego has more on the unusual places doctors are seeing cancer pop up. >> reporter: anita myer spent years, dealing with irritated lips. >> they just always looked chapped. and it was red and sometimes flaky. >> reporter: but she didn't think she had anything to worry about. >> perfect and flawless. >> reporter: until visiting dr. noel sherbert. >> i just thought i had chapped lips. i had no idea it was cancer. >> she was diagnosed with precancerous sun damage of the lips. a condition that is becoming more common. >> people who used a lot of lip

[ stock bells ringing ] >> big question. how would investors react to the jp morgan lawsuit. s&p off 4. and the nasdaq is up a fraction. let's go to new york where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. the markets brought little change today, despite the news that jp morgan chase lost $2 billion in just six weeks. they lost this in a failed hedging strategy that was actually designed to help control risk. no customers suffered as a result of the mistake. but that didn't keep jp morgan stock from dropping. other banks saw their stocks fall as well. some are renewing calls for tougher banking regulation. consumer sentiment is the highest it's been since before

the recession. the results surprised wall street. there are indications the economy is slowing down. but the new survey found americans are upbeat about the job market and encouraged about falling gas prices. lower prices at the pump pushed wholesale prices down 2% last month. it was the first decline since december and shows inflation remains under control. the upscale retailer nordstrom says profits rose a modest 2.7%. that was less than wall street -- [ no audio, please stand by ] the whale, named shiewka, has been alone in captivity for six months. an animal activist has started a petition, demanding the park find her a companion. park officials say they still haven't found a whale

24 at bwi marshall. these are all higher than this yesterday. 30 was kind of an average wind gust. they have come down a little bit. but the sustained winds are still in that 10- to 15- -mile-per-hour range in the state. winds will shift from the west to northwest. and start to tap in around memphis, even kansas city. all around 77 to 76. we're going to be a little warmer tomorrow than today. and that difference means we're going to go from the low 70s up to about 5, maybe even 10 degrees in parts of the area. next chance of showers comes from the west. by late sunday into monday and tuesday, could be a widely scattered sprinkle or so. primarily to the west as that front approaches sunday night. but all of your plans should be long over by the time this front gets here. with the high in place, it's not going to be a lot of moisture with that. better chances of rain will come with the approach of a warm front, monday into tuesday. tuesday could be the day we see

killing as many as seven militants. it was the second attack against al qaeda in the arabian peninsula in less than a week. >> reporter: last weekend, a drone attack killed alcoso, a key commander in the group. he was also wanted for the bombing of the uss cole in 2000. the air strikes are the latest blow for the terrorist groups. earlier this week, the cia and foreign intelligence agencies foiled a plan to bomb an airliner. the suicide bomber handed the bomb over to the u.s. and told officials where to locate alcoso. >> this is one of the most sophisticated operations we have ever run. we are having access to extremely vital information. >> reporter: but the operation was nearly blown, when someone leaked information about it to the associated press, forcing agents to wrap it up ahead of schedule. >> reporter: searntsz joseph lieberman, chairman of the

homeland committee says he believes leaks interrupted parts of the operation that were not yet completed. >> they did something really harmful to our national security and hope we catch them. >> reporter: defense secretary leon pineta said this not only hurt the operation but could make it harder to recruit future informants. >> to be able to do that and do that effectively, you have to protect these people. >> reporter: expermits say the -- experts say the agent is probably in hiding and with a new agency. susan mcginness, wjz eyewitness news. >> the associated press held off on reporting on the bomb threat until the white house gave assurance that the operation was over. a new motion to dismiss charges against former presidential candidate john edwards. the decision comes after the judge ruled there was enough evidence to let jurors decide. this means lawyers will start calling witnesses monday. edwards has pleaded not guilt

to six criminal counts, related to campaign finance violations. the attorney for george zimmerman says public release of the trayvon martin case should be delayed. kai is live in the newsroom with more on what he's saying now. >> reporter: that's right. what we understand is that zimmerman's attorney, mark omerra says the release of the evidence should be waiting until. under florida law, it would normally be made public at the same time. he said if witnesses are hounded by the media, it might jeopardize zimmerman's chances of a fair while. -- trial. >> zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder in trayvon martin's death. he is claiming self-defense. a shocking admission. the pilot of the barge that collided with a duck boat in philadelphia says it could have been avoided. mart devlin said he could have stopped the barge if he had

stayed at his post and wasn't on the phone. two tourists were killed in the 2010 crash. devlin is serving one year for the maritime equivalent of involuntary manslaughter. florida a&m university's marching band appears not to be ready to take the field any time soon. that is in light of new information in the robert champion death. >> reporter: when florida's famed band, the marching 100, traveled to orlando last november, 60 of the more than 300 performers on the field had no business being there because they were not enrolled in a mandatory band course. a direct violation in school policy. and they can't even confirm they were enrolled in college. 11 defendants were charged in the crime. three, caleb jackson, brian jones, and lasherry condor, were among the ineligible

performers. and dr. julian white, the band director, admitted to us today, that hangers-on, including alumni, were a problem in the school's hazing culture. >> i think that a small percentage of our alumni may not have been mature enough to move on with their lives. >> did some alumni participate in the hazing of undergraduates? >> i don't know. i have suspicions. >> reporter: 19-year-old famu student, aaron goldson, another defendant in champion's death, also faces felony charges in a separate band hazing attack. the leg of a freshman female clarinet player was broken. >> robert loved that school. he loved that band. and they all failed him. >> so far, no comment from the university. the school's board of trustees is expected to meet to discuss the band's future. well, police in baltimore county are warning people to be careful when they use atms. especially late at night.

they are looking for two suspects in connection with a robbery and abduction from last weekend in towson. at 2:00 a.m., police say the victim was held at knife point and forced to go to two nearby atms and take out money. they also say this might be connected to a similar crime earlier this year. anyone with information is asked to call police. a georgia graduate student is fighting for her life tonight, after she is diagnosed with a flesh-eating bacteria. mary is live with more on her condition and how she got it. >> reporter: amy copeland cut her leg after falling from a zip line. and now she's in critical condition. the 24-year-old was diagnosed with the bacteria, just three days after the accident. she was then flown to a hospital in augusta, where doctors amputated her left leg. her family says she still faces medical uncertainties. but they say the most important thing is to stay positive. >> the support that we've gotten, the prayers that we've got, i believe are the only reasons that amy is alive today. when you have this kind of odds

an investigation is under way after a construction worker is killed on the job in california. he was reportedly working on a mansion when an 8-foot trench collapsed. no one on the site saw the accident. and the man hadn't been seen by anyone for 20 minutes. so it's unclear how long he was trapped. a drunk driver crashes into a virginia family's home, while fleeing for police. it all started with a routine traffic stop. salem police say that the driver refused to pull over, after spinning tires. officers chased him for about a
